Colorful parties and identities

A few weeks ago, I photographed an event at an art gallery in Greensboro and the curator of the gallery invited me to photograph another event they had yesterday which I gladly accepted. As I was leaving that event yesterday, I came across a large dance party in downtown celebrating Hispanic heritage month and found that the event definitely used color to create a mood and display many different visual identities. In general, the lighting was very colorful which helped promote a very positive mood and the event itself also featured many different colored flags which were used to represent various Hispanic countries. Out of the many photos that I took for this event, I chose these three because I feel as though they best represented the colorfulness of the event as well as the visual identities seen with the flags. The mood that I as well as the overall event attempted to imply was a very positive and unifying one. The event was intended  for people to get together and have fun in a welcoming environment and was originally created to be a latin dance class but grew into something that celebrated latino culture and bridged the gap between said culture and others. One thing I definitely struggled with when taking these photos though was the low light. Because they were taken at night and in an area with not a lot of light, I had to unfortunately bump my ISO up a bit which created some noise but overall, I think that they still helped to promote my overall message. My second photo was also a little rushed because it was not a photo that I felt like I could wait for rather it was a photo that I felt like I had to take quickly while I still had the opportunity. Overall though I did enjoy taking the photos and I am happy with how they turned out considering the time of day that they were taken. I also felt as though the event, because it was unknown to me, helped show me that you never do know what you’ll find just walking around the city.
